Where Is Your Courage? explores the difference between appearance and action, questioning what it truly means to live with courage. Rather than celebrating confidence as something performed, the painting reminds us that genuine bravery is revealed through the choices we make rather than the image we project.
The work evolved through transformation. Originally conceived as a painting of the Minotaur - a symbol of the creative mind imprisoned within the labyrinth of logic - it gradually changed as layers were reworked and removed. As the composition evolved, only the human figure remained, shifting the painting's focus away from mythology and towards a more universal reflection on courage and authenticity.
The title poses a direct challenge to the viewer. It asks us to look beyond displays of confidence or strength and instead consider the quieter acts of courage that shape our lives: speaking honestly, acting with integrity and remaining true to ourselves when it would be easier not to. In this way, the painting suggests that bravery is measured not by what we show the world, but by how we choose to live.
Ultimately, Where Is Your Courage? is a meditation on authenticity, reminding us that the greatest acts of courage are often the simplest - choosing truth over performance, vulnerability over pretence and conviction over comfort.
