The Hollow Self explores the profound sense of disconnection that can arise when we lose touch with our authentic selves. Inspired by a close friend and created during a period when both the artist and his subject were navigating depression, the painting reflects the quiet emptiness that can exist beneath the surface of everyday life.
Rather than focusing on addiction or outward behaviour, the work explores the deeper emotional longing that often lies beneath it. When we become disconnected from ourselves, we may seek moments of relief through pleasure, distraction or intimacy, hoping they will fill an inner void. Yet these experiences remain fleeting, offering temporary escape rather than lasting fulfilment.
The figure appears emotionally detached, searching beyond himself for a sense of aliveness that cannot be found externally.
